I'm in the process of removing the Left steering clutch from my dozer. I am at the point of trying to remove the piston rod from the yoke. I removed the 1/2 inch bolt from the end of the rod. Can't figure out how to get the rod out from the end of the yolk. I have the manuals but they are of no help.

The piston rod twist freely and it will move back and forth but no more that 1/2 in. Tried pushing/pulling the yoke but no go. What am I missing?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks
Tom

Tom, you should be able to shove the piston back into the cyl and get the link out. But you can take the cyl out if it is still in the way. Another thing to do now is check the ball bearings on the ends of the steering valve spools. They haven't failed yet or you couldn't have stopped the tractor like you did but make sure they are solid before putting them back in.

Hey Tom glad to see your tackling it yourself,I dont know if a 3 is the same or not but I done a 5 here while back and I remember I had to take the piston and housing assembly loose and pull it out as a unit to get piston rod out, it was bolted to the side of the steering clutch housing and had a couple of hard metal lines to it.

JC the D5 you did is very similar to Tom's D3 except he has dry clutches and different style bands.

Bob/Ont & gatractorman;

Thanks again!! Believe it or not manual doesn't mention that. But did take a real, real close look at the pictures and sure enough, the one showing the rod in place, has the piston extended, the next one show the piston pushed in. If you weren't looking for it you never would see it.

Will continue tomorrow after work as get the rod out and move on.

I'm sure I'll have more questions!!

Thanks
Tom
