On my 350 crawler the steering clutches will not allow the dozer to turn. It has sat for 2 years. It will go forward and reverse and the brakes seem to work. How do I adjust them or unfreeze them. I would appreciate any advise. Thanks.

When you fill the clutch housing with fuel, you will be tearing it down for sure. This will ruin the composite clutches.

Follow Crawler Heaven's advice and tear it down.

A couple of things:

1. Get the Parts Manual and Service Manual.

2. To break the track, CAREFULLY blast the master pin out with a torch and replace it when reassembling. It is faster and easier and a new master is only about $10. I don't know about you but my time is worth more than that.

3. Freeze the new master overnight. It should slide right in (Ok, maybe with a little help from a hammer).

4. Now is a good time to turn the pins and bushings.

5. I had a machine that was abused. The clutch would not disengage on one side. It turned out that the vertical shaft in the housing was bent. I changed shafts on both sides and the bushings.

6. Check for cracks in all the housings.

7. I modified an engine hoist to lift finals out of the frame. I used a piece of 4" tube. I cut cut it on an angle (about 15 degrees for my hoist, remember an engine hoist is designed to lift high, it will be at the bottom of the stroke)and welded it back together to fit under the Hyd Tank and Battery Box. See No. 9.

8. You do not have to cut the track frame to remove the finals. (Seen it done, read the service manual, you don't have do it).

9. I made a lifting bracket similar to the one in the service manual from 1/2 rebar. It is hard and will not bend under the weight. Taper the ends to fit in the holes in the finals. Tap it in with a hammer, a final falling on your foot will ruin your day.

10. There is no better time to change seals. Do not remove, or if you do, abuse the seal on the axle shaft, it can be VERY expensive.

11. Get the clutch adj tool. I think I only paid like $20 at JD. The SM will give you the part no. for that model. It will save a lot of problems later.

12. Change all clutch parts brake bands, and throw out bearings.

13. Believe it not, I got better prices on some things at JD. Buy your parts from and AG JD dealer. They can get all the same parts as a construction dealer but a lot cheaper. Hence the parts manual, he will not be able to look up your part number(no const PMs on his shelf), but he will be more than happy to order the parts.

14. Replace the gaskets on the top of the clutch housings. Water will run right down in the housings if you don't.

15. Good luck.

Hi Dan, here I am again needing more help with those clutches. When you jack it up, where do I put the jacks to lift both sides at the same time? When I pull the finals out, can I get to the steering clutches or do I need to pull the fuel tank also and work from the back side? The manual is'nt real clear on that issue.
Thanks for any advise you can give me.
Jim

Jim: Try breaking them free first. If that doesnt work than they'll have to come apart. Give us a shout for discs and related parts. www.pdmechanical.com

Thanks Steve. Now how do I go about breaking them apart? Try one of the previous suggestions from crawler heaven and the others?

Thats your best bet. You can also try filling the steering clutch housings with fuel oil or kerosene and letting them sit for a few days then run it again, trying to break them free. You can leave to kero or? in there when your running it. Sometimes a good vinegar bath will work too. If they do break loose with kero a vinegar bath afterward will help get the oily kero out. Then run the machine at least once a month and pull both levers back and "slip" the clutches a bit. Not too much just enough to keep the free and clean.

Steve, would you or anyone else be able to tell me where the drain plugs are located for the steering clutch housings? I have a manual coming but am getting anxious to get this piece of iron in the barn so I can get to work on it.
Thanks for any information.

Try pushing against or running into a solid object (like a big tree)with steering clutches pulled back. Might just break them loose. Be ready on main clutch for stall if tracks don't spin. Don't get hurt. Good luck. Dale

If one side still works you,can aways use it by reverseing the mechine to get it loaded and unloaded.I,have had to do this several times and it can be a slow go if you, have very far to go or a lot of things to go around to get there.

To CRAWLER HEAVEN.
Thanks for the reply, however I really need to get this beast in the barn undercover. Is there is any way I can adjust it enough to turn it even a little?

You can try just running it back and forth and repeatedly try to steer it. Try pushing with it also with the levers pulled to the release point...not so far as to engage the brakes ... I don't have any parts to sell you....!!!

You could also try and back off the brake band a few turns so you are getting more clutch and try pushing something while you have the levers held back and see if one side will break loose, at least then you can steer somewhat. But in all honesty, I highly doubt that you will have any success doing this. I have never yet got one to break loose, especially one that has been sitting for any length of time, more so if it has sat outside.
