I have a mid 70s 3cyd diesel backhoe that does not like to start. It does not smoke or show signs of engine wear, but cold or hot it does not like to start. It takes a shot of starting fluid to get ger going. Also seems to take a bit long to rev up to high rpms. When I put a hydralic load on the engine it brings rpms down, Hydralic pump or Injection pump, Anybody have one of these things Thanks..Richard

You probably have, but I'll ask anyhow. Have you checked that the stop control is going, and staying, completely home? (eg is wire long enough) Can cause your symptoms.

Change the fuel filters and clean any screens in the fuel system first. Then see about a fuel pump overhaul. Sounds like low fuel delivery if it's hard to start and not smoking. Bad nozzels will give you smoke and so will a worn out engine.

Richard, the pump you replaced was the lift pump that moves the fuel from the tank to the fuel injection pump, right.

Yes it was the transfer pump not injection

Well Richard if you are sure the fuel supply line has nothing clogging it, as you likely are then you could safley get someone to look at the injector pump. If it's a rotary pump they have a small vane pump inside them too that charges them, hope for the best.
