Here's the deal,,I have a 3444 backhoe and the steering has a problem,IT WOUNT STEER! I used to get it to flop steer by pulling the diverter valve to shut offthe pressure to steering,(which would only turn to the left),,and just steer with the brakes,,but now I cant get it to steer either way. The piston seems locked, but I dont think it is the piston,I believe it is getting pressure from both sides at a time.I think the problem is in the steering wheel valve. My question is,,since I cant find the sterring wheel valve,,I wonder is I can buy a two way Hydraulic valve with a Joy Stick, and hook it up that way instead of a steering wheel..Any one have thoughts on this matter? I don't know who you tried to get the valve thru but call your Komatsudealer and get the part number of the valve, then call your IH ag dealer with the part number - sww if he can get it or tellyou what tractors it was used on. You might also try Bates corp as they specialize in used IH parts

I had a 3414. 1 model smaller. These were British built tractors imported mainly to Canada. Many found their way to the States.. Strangely enough, being imported to Canada my best parts source at the time was an International Dealer in....Texas. Having seen a 3444 but didn't study it, at a quick glance it appeared to be just a little bigger version of my 3414. If that is true, with the engine shut off ( the steering box at the base of the steering wheel has no worm gear or anything in it, just hydraulic valves ) if you turn the steering wheel enough ( it won't react as fast or easy as when the engine is running ) the wheels should steer. If the wheel spins but nothing happens you can bet it's all the stuff in the steering box that has the problem. With the engine off there is supossed to be a steering wheel actuated pump to move the steering to allow you to move/steer a dead tractor. If the wheel locks I'd say it would mean a frozen steering cylinder but that would be REAL rare & the tractor would have had to set a long time & had the fluid leak out. Speaking of which, back when I had the manual it said you were supossed to bleed the air out of everything. Is it possible you have an air bubble? I had some leaks & 99% of the time the tractor sat in the shed. If it sat long enough for the fluid to leak out I'd fill her up & before I started her I'd spin the steering wheel till I was exhausted in both directions till I felt resistance. Then I'd fire her up & she'd steer. Try that.... Either way to change out the steering box takes barely a couple hours most of that time getting the steering wheel off the shaft & removing the fuel tank...

I liked the machine, thought for it's vintage in many ways was WAY ahead of it's time /some ways stil in the stone age. The hydraulics were quick & powerfull & if parts weren't such a search, I'd still have the machine.

I know a guy who did this with a 1960 Ford 4000 Industrial tractor/loader/backhoe. The power steering had cables and other wise was a nightmare to fix and he couldnt get parts, so he did away with the steering wheel and used a single lever "joy stick" hooked up to the steering cylinder. The guy wasn't the handiest guy in the world but he was still able to get it to work (probably had a buddy that was handy) I'd say that is a last resort, as I'd rather steer with the normal steering wheel especially if I were going on the road at any kind of speed.
