I got my truck stuck plowing on Christmas. Got the backhoe running and pulled it out. Decided to plow a path to the road with the backhoe. (Cat 416 diesel). Backhoe quit about 3/4 of the way down. No fuel to the injectors. I changed the fuel filter (frozen chunks in it) and used a blow dryer to thaw around the fuel pump. Got a trickle of fuel but no go. I had added a "Artic no gel no freeze" product back in Nov. but apparently it didn't work! Got about 3/4 tank full of fuel in the machine now, it seems ok. I suspect it's frozen in the line leading to the pump. It's supposed to warm up Monday and Tuesday (40's). do I need to bleed anything once the fuel thaws? I'm not a diesel mechanic. (Pretty confident on gas engines but diesel is new to me). Any suggestions / help appreciated. Thanks, Mark.

Mark, Every one forgot the big problem, water in the fuel( I am gussing it`t not 10 below there)If you can drain off a gal off the bottem of the tank and see if you have water and go from there. If your fuel is jelling the best additve I have found is called FPPF most truck stops will have it.

Ive had this happen several times with the 416s we run at work.Make sure to clean out the sediment bowl on the right side of the engine. It can be completely full of water and the tractor will still run.Ive actually had Ice split the glass bowl in two when it froze.

Mike watch that water seperator bowl and drain it off if you see water building up in it.
Later Bob

I have had great success using 99%pure isopropal alchohol to break the surface tesion of the water.this in turn prevents it from freezing and makes it so you can the water out of your system.Ialways leave the fuel tank FULL so there is less chance of chance of condensation. All deisel fuel has some water in it so any thing you can do to mange this will pay off.The old trick of adding gasoline to the fuel tank of a desiel is of virtually no good(I know I just opened a can of worms but will stick by my statement).Ihave made most of my living by making service calls and rescueing frozen vehicles for the last 25 years. You need to have an additive the will lower the cloud point of the fuel.Sorry for the long post hope this helps steve

Steve is right there use to be a additive that was just 4 letters like eppt or something like that.It would get the water out by braking it down to blind with the fuel. And I always used K-1 not gas after putting gas in by acident and burned a piston.I ran the upper mid west for 15 yrs. After going to school for 2 yrs on the side of road I got the right foumula.A 20% K1 is good for the gelling. To much gas can burn your pistons. But just a old truck drivers words.lol

Mark, we have a fleet of 25 Cat 416 and new 420 at the place I work. Have had the same thing happen more than once. The first thing I'd do is replace the filter with a CAT filter, they ARE built to a diffrent spec and do a better job on keeping the water out of your pump. When we have an ice up we change the filter, pre fill it with fuel add a prodect caller H.E.A.T. to the tank and bleed the pump. Many of the 416 used a perkins deiseland they have a bleed point on the injector pump head. Most of them will not start unless you get all the air out of them at this point. Hope this helps and let us know. John

Mark, since you got chunks of ice when you changed the filters then you have to assume the fuelline and fule tank may have water ( ice) in them. i would get about 32 oz of drygas and add to the tank. then if possible use the hair dryer to warm the lines to the fulepump. then you "HAVE" to bleed the fule filters.. it may take a while. there should be a hand oporated fuel pump to pump fuel into the filters and the air out..it may be gravity fed also. when you get a good flow of fuel out the bleeders then close them off. then try to start the engine. it may fire up but miss alot. if it doesnt fire up then there may be bleeders on the injectors but most later injection cystems dont have bleeders on the injectors.the stuff for antie gell useually doesnt do anything for the water in the sistem. drygass should do the trick to thaw the ice and get you going.

I wouldn't bleed any lines yet, I would put some power service in it first to take care of the ice, or put #1 diesel in it, make sure your filter is full of good fuel. Glen

Not a Cat man, but all diesels have to be bled. Start with bled screw on fuel filter(s) using hand pump on fuel pump if equipped, then bled screw on injection pump and with most, the line on the injectors themselves.
