Wondering if the 4wd hoe is necessary. I remember when there was no such thing and all the work seemed to get done. I kind of don't want to spend the extra $ for such a rig. I think I would rather have a 4x1 bucket and extenda hoe. Any thoughts??? Am I missing something.... will a 4wd just get me stuck more? baron

One advantage to a 4x4 mahcine is when you do a lot of loading out of a pile into trucks. With 2 wheel drive, especially the older 580 cases, you get plenty of rear wheel hop. This always digs ruts, makes the going bumper and you waste more time backdragging so you can keep the soil pile neat and on grade. Fellow in town has a 580 E 2wd. Talked to him recently, blew the ring and pinion backing out of soft material with a full bucket of material. Sent it to local Case dealer for repair, $$$. Also if knocking piles down to grade, a 4x4 machine makes the job easier and faster and you won't loose you temper as quick. My 2 cents, Phil

I have a 580 Super K (2wd). It does fine but when I load a heavy load in heavy soil, I think a 4wd would be better. As far as getting a backhoe stuck, it can be done if you work at it. Good luck , Ron

I currently have two 2 wheeler hoes and there is no comparison between them and a 4x4 . Once you,ve run a 4x4 and gotten used to it you'll never go back.Or at least you wont want to.

One thing to consider with a "used" 4wd machine is there a lots more moving parts and many are rather small and don't take well to neglect and abuse. Also consider that there are plenty of knuckleheads out there that will put these machines into unbelievable places just because they think 4wd will make them invincable. That said, check the front drive very carefully. I repair machines for a living and seen too many failures frorm improper use. Personally I own a JD510B 2wd and am very happy with it. JD and Cat have the best parts availibility in my are (New England)JCB parts, in this area good luck. All machines are good till they break. Chuck

Something to consider, the 4wd option adds about
2-3k pounds (I'm talking a Case 580 size hoe).

If you work on a high clay type soil, that additional weight may soften the soil up too much.

My soil around here is like that, high groundwater table, and high clay content.

Runover it too many times, and it just turns to soup. The added weight of 4wd makes it happen even faster.

4wd would be nice though, but I've rarely ever found I needed it.

Just depends what you need to do...

In my case I would rather give up the cab and extendahoe and fancy bucket than the 4 wheel drive. If you get stuck with 4WD you shouldn't be there. Just try once pushing snow with 2WD and then with 4WD and you'll wait till you can afford a 4WD. I wouldn't take a 2WD as a gift if I had to try to make a living running it. I have 11 pieces of john deere construction equipment in addition to farming.

Personally I think 4wd is the way to go. I recently picked up a JCB 1400B 4x4 for real cheap $$ and am impressed by its power and ability to push even in the mud...the 4 wheel drive really adds alot more pushing force in my opinion.

But if you get it stuck up to the frame in mud even 4wd wont help you, I did that with a John Deere 310e but was able to use the backhoe to pull myself out.

Buy as much machine as you can afford cause you may kick yourself down the road if you dont :)

HI Gary..... I am also looking at a '96 JCB 214 series II. It has 4wd and extendahoe but no 4x1 bucket. 5000 hrs...dealer wants $20K....What do you think of these hoes? Dealer says it has the best digging power of all of them. I hear they are the largest mfg of hoes in the US! Any info on the JCB is appreciated.....like things to look for and whatever you think..... thanks baron

I am not an expert on JCB hoes and mine is older than the one you are looking at and doesn't have all the bells and whistles :)

I read in this forum opinions about JCB hoes after I bought mine that they can have numerous electrical problems and being made in the UK parts can be pricey.....heck I have had to upgrade alot of my tools to metric in order to turn bolts on it. There are a couple folks on this forum that work or used to work on them and have mixed reviews about them.

I got mine for a great deal so that's why I bought it. Personally I would have bought a cat or john deere if I could find one for under $10k (plus I am used to john deere controls)

If you have any more questions feel free to email me at luvmud@yahoo.com

I think it depends alot on what your planning to do with it, personaly I think if you use common sense you'll never get stuck with either one.

I wouldn`t even look at a 2 wheeler, just like night and day in the mud and hills a 4-wheeler will keep you working. Tony
