I got a chance to buy a Cat 951B crawler from a guy down the road. I have been trying to find some information on it but so far no luck. It has power shift on it and I think about a three yard bucket. The undercarriage is about fifty to sixty percent and the machine looks and sounds good. It has extra set of tracks and the pins look good. He is trying for seventy five hundred and is it worth it and is it a good machine. Thanks

There wan't a whole lot of them around. They filled the "gap" between the 943 and the 955. Not a lot of people thought the "gap" needed to be filled. As far as I know there wasn't anything wrong with them--just not many people bought them.

Dave it depends on the area I think, there used to be about as many 941's as 951's and more 955's and even more 977's then only 1 or 2 983's in this area. The new excavators have cut down the track loader population a bit now.

They are good machines William, I can't comment on price as I don't buy and sell them and don't know enough to say. Check what they are going for in construction trade papers that advertise them for sale. Put a crowbar behind the sprockets and final drive cases and look for loose bearings( sprocket moving in and out) as well as oil leaks at the sprocket seals, worn pins and bushings in the loader arms, linkage and at the bucket. drive it around and see it steers easily, goes into each gear.Hope this is some help.

Hi, William. Assuming that it is in good condition, it would probably be a good buy at that price. They bring around $20-30K Australian here in Australia in good condition. Bob/Ont is pretty right about checking them out before purchase. As far as I am aware, all 951's were powershift, but I would be very careful of buying a 951B as they commonly had over-heating problems. You may find that adding a header tank of around 5 to 6 gallons capacity up under the hood to increase water capacity might help. Take a fairly large bleed line from the hot water (top) radiator pipe into the header tank and back into the hot water pipe and have a filler spout just under the engine access cover to fill the header tank. The later 951C just would not overheat unless there was something wrong with radiator or engine. Coming in between the 941 and the 955, the '51's had noticeably more ZIP than either of those machines. If they had a mechanical weakness, it would possibly be final drives. They did chew a bit of fuel - about 4 to 4 1/2 imperial gallons - maybe 5 to 6 U.S. gallons per hour. They WILL do a lot of work for that consumption and are a very handy machine for a LOT of jobs, especially if they have a 4-in-1 bucket and rear rippers. Have fun.
