1010c final drive question

the manual says to press the outer bearing onto the flanged axle shaft until it is 6 1/2" from the end of the shaft.mine slips on easily to 6 3/8 then hits a lip on the axle.is this a problem? also,can someone explain to me what keeps the entire axle assembly from riding out of the housing?I can't understand how the retainer and cap screws do anything but press the inner bearing cone into the shoulder on the axle.

thanks for your reply.my manual dosn't mention a shoulder,just the 61/2" measurement.And it seems to me that the retainer and cap screws only hold the gear on the shaft,not the entire assembly in the housing.I've been looking at the manual as well as the actual parts,and I'm not seeing the big picture,unlessthe tight fit of the outer bearing on the shaft prevents the axle from falling out,in which case I'm in trouble cause mine slips on rather than having to be pressed on

The inside retainer puts pressure on the the inside cone, which butts against the washer that is against the side of the bullgear. This keeps the bull gear tight on the shaft, and retains the inner cone to the axle as well. The fact that the bearing cones oppose each other keeps the entire assembly centered in the case. The axle can not come out, because you would have to pull the retainer, inner cone, and flat washer through the bullgear to do so.
As far as the bearing only slipping on so far, it should only go so far. The bearing is a press fit on the axle, not a slip fit. If it was a slip fit, there would be nothing to keep the bearing from rotating on the axle. Lavoy

You would be shocked at some of the stuff I have pulled apart. Have had at least two finals where someone assembled them with both cups facing the same direction, and then shimmed the axle so much that they eventually wedged the bull gear against the side of the final case, and then just ran it.
As far as doing it twice, I have always said that it why I have 3 times as much experience, I usually end up doing it three times to get it right.

I got it!Thanks Lavoy.I was thinking that the outside retainer only held the oil seal,and didn't realize that the bearing presses against it,also.And now on to final assembly.....
