Anybody know how to check the rpm on a diesel motor if you don't have a tach on the motor?
Do you need a special tool? Can it be done using the magneto? Am I going to need alot of money for this one.... Thanks, Paul

Thanks to all for the excellant answers, it gives me something to think about and a direction to go in. I might check into installing a tach/hour meter on the dash. I think they had them on the later model TD6's. Again, Thanks to all, Paul

You could always drive a relatively slow running machine on the pto, such as a small square baler. Count the nodder (or whatever) speed and compare with the specifications - usually rated at 540 rpm on the pto, and engine rated speed for the pto should be in the tractor operators manual.
This would give a good ball-park figure. I have a photo tacho and it is perfectly adequate.
Try your local dealer and pay them to check it?

Paul, from what you say,I believe you have an International there. If you think the RPM is not right you could take the ground wire off of the mag and use an automotive tack that clips on the plug wire. However if the fuel injection pump and governor have not been touched the speeds should be close. Most pumps are setup on the fuel bench to get the full load speed right and all you need to adjust is the low idle. Then make sure your linkage will pull the governor wide open.

Hi, Paul. You will need a 'contact' rev counter (The type where you push the end of the rev cpounter shaft against the center of the end of the rotating shaft whose speed you wish to check.), a stop watch and to find a rotating shaft somehwere, preferably the crankshaft, where you can push the end of the rev counter shaft against the end of the rotating shaft. This whole operation can sometimes be anywhere from rather difficult to downright dangerous depending on the motor and the application it is in. To use any other shaft than the crankshaft, you need to know the EXACT gearing ratio for that shaft. A PTO shaft is a good example. They are usually geared to rotate at 540 RPM at a set engine speed that should be obtainable either from your user's manual or from your dealer. This information can also be found on an advisory notice plate on some machines.
As for using the magneto shaft, unless your diesel engine is a gasoline-start International diesel -- or a similar engine that I have never heard of -- it WILL NOT have a magneto connected to the main diesel. Some diesel engines have a dedicated opening to attach a tacho, either permanently or for a one-off test. You could check with your dealer about this. Happy counting.

There is several hand-held tachs out there but they are quite spendy, I use a photo-tach, you put a little piece of tape on the crank pulley and shoot a beam of light on it from the gun and it reads RPM, I also have a manual RPM gauge someone gave me but I never got the courage to use it, its got the little rubber piece on the end of it that has to be in contact with what being checked, they also have injector pulse reading RPM gauges, I didnt quite follow you on the magneto is this a gas, diesel hybrid?
