Last summer, I and 2 friends bought a Cat D-8, vintage 1947, serial number 2U6xxx. We got some parts books but nothing that shows what the gear shift selection is. Parts books shows more that one combination of gears so I would guess there may be more than one shift pattern. It is real hard to figure out by trial and error as all the choices are slow. Any one out there that can put some light on this unknown??? Thank you. G.S.

George S. Having viewed your post I belive your tractor is newer than 1947 as you have stated. 2U S/N6XXXX would be a 1948 model, the 2U started with S/N4228 thu. S/N6199 for the year 1948. It would have the constant mesh transmission which started with S/N5307, not the old "Slide-Bar" as Dave G speaks of,and the forward and reverse level should be on the right side of the speed selector lever. Starting with S/N 2U7488 the forward and reverse lever is on the left side of the speed selector lever. I will e-mail you a copy the shifting pattern for this year (1948) tractor.

Hello Kelly,
Thanks ever so much for the diagram and info. It answers the question and tells me why there was some problem trying to get the beast to reverse when using 4th or 5th, 'cause your info implies that there is an interlock to prevent that event. I have the operators instruction book for the D-8, tractor 1H1350 to 1H9999 and 8R1-up, all models have the gate shifter, as the early 2U's had. I checked the auction ad and it says that it is a 48. In looking at the parts book, I see that all the gears are constant mesh and engagement is done by the sliding collar method. The book also shows optional trans gears and the shift plate, which I did not find, so I assume that this machine has the stock trans. The trial and error driving method came up with a shift pattern along the lines of what it is. So, if it warms up a little and some snow disappears, we can get back to clearing some trees out of hedgerows. Thank you again for the information.

I used to run one of those bears--but long lost the answer to your question in the fog of many long gone tractors.
If I remember anything out of the fog I think it was a gated gear box and low was left and back and then second was up and over one and so on.
You will be able to tell the "orientation" going from one on the left to one all the way on the right---high to low is a pretty big jump.
What I can vividly remember is being worn out at the end of the day--all for $2.25/hr.

Call me a wuss and give me a power shift ;)
