I'm looking at a 500 D dozer thats in very good shape-- put it won't push a very large blade full of material-- the man who is offering this crawler
said it needed a new torque converter-- since then I've been told that the 500 models did not have torque converters-- Is this true??-- If so, what other problem(s) should I need to be aware of??-- Any suggestions?? thank you----- - Jeff

The 500 came in both a manual and a TC version. If the TC has gone bad on that you can tell it by putting gauges on the shift control assembly. There are three fittings for you tell clutch pressure ect. If I remember right the static pressure on the pack at idle is close to 150-180 PSI.

The machine was made in Canada. The TC was made by a company in England and they still make TCs but not of that style. Since that is a later model IH Komatus might still have the parts for the internals.

If pressure is ok then you can problems either in the clutch pack area or in the steering brakes. If they are oily or slipping you will not be able to pull much of a load. To check on that go underneath the tractor at the rear end and pull off the inspection plate covers. If it full of grease ext and swiming in there, you are slipping badly that way. There are ways to clean that out.

I the clutch pack area when it is running it probably will howl ect.

On the TC there is a sump screen. That could be plugged also. That is bugger to get out and you have to take the top cover off. To tell if there is a lot of metal in the trany. Take a magnet on a stiff rod and insert in to the fill tube and fish around. If you come up with a lot, your clutch pack or something else is going bad in there and the bill will be really steep to fix it.

Thanks look at www.ibdozing.com there are some guys there with IH500s that have redone them and gotten them going.

I would say your clutches are oil glazed and slipping
