I am looking to buy a JD,Case or Cat dozer, in the size of a D-4 or 450 size in these brands. Will be cleaning waterways, small trees, fencelines etc on a very rolling hills set of farms. Need to know what they are worth and what to look for. Used to own/fix a MF500 before, don't need a big one, not into contract work anymore. Thanks from Iowa.

For cleaning ditches and removing brush and stumps the JD would be the way to go. The 6 way blade is perfect for that kind of work. Yes the Cat is heavier and can doze more while going straight, but you yourself said that you didn't want a big machine. The JD is a well rounded machine and would handle your farm work just fine. Nothing runs like a Deere!!!!!

Free advise is worth just what you pay for it--so with that and not knowing anymore about what you want to do with it I would go with a D4. Just because I have spent a lot of time on them and for the size they are real work horses.

That said, if you are comparing a 450 with a 6-way blade to a D-4 with a straight blade, or even angle balde and doing a lot of ditch work I would go the other way.

The Cat is a heavier machine and could drag the 450 around all day (that should start something ;) ) that may or may not be an advantage to you if you are working in a lot of soft muck.

If you are looking for a bulldozer then the D4, if you are looking for a grading dozer a 450.

As to price--no answer other than of the three Case, JD and Cat, all of equal condition the Case would likely be a little less money.
450s suffer a tad from the JD syndrome ;)

Let the war begin!!!!! !!

NO argument from me, the D4 is a lot heavier dozer than my Case 450. I've run them both quite a bit, (the D4 had a straight blade) and i wouldn't trade my 450 (6 way blade) for it even money, "if" it was to stay on my place. Maybe in some other case i would?? BTW, i was on the AMOC site eariler, and a guy there was trying to sell a CASE 450 for 10K, and from the pictures he posted it looked like a nice one. It did need blade cyclinders, but it's worth a look. Robert

Hello, I am A AC crawler collector and I think you need A HD7W AC. Work circles around any D4 of the same age!!

Re the AC HD7W: And so it oughta work circles around the D4, if my memory is correct. It was a heavier machine by, I think, about two tons. Say what you like about the AC crawlers, they were better than Internationals but never up to Cat. standards of durability.
For your 'rolling' country, Farmboy, I'd be looking at a wide gauge machine for stability, preferably with wide track plates too as you mentioned cleaning waterways. Even a small 'swampy' might be worth looking at. You might pay some extra bucks for a GOOD D4 but you could well live to regret any of the others with the possible exception of the small Komatsu 'dozers, 31's, 41's, 51's. I live in Australia, so I have no idea what the availability of Komatsu (Kummagutsa) is over your way, but they are definitely worth a look.
"Nothing runs like a Deere". Trouble is they work like a deer too. Feed their faces and then lay down for a while.
Case really should have 'Bad' in front of it.
That should incite a riot, shouldn't it?
Whatever you look at, get it checked out pretty thoroughly BEFORE you lay down your bucks. If any repairs need to be done, deduct the cost of those repairs from what you would be willing to pay for a good machine. If the sums don't add up, walk away. If the vendor tells you it's only peanuts to repair something like track chains and rollers or a transmission, feel free to call him/her a liar before you walk away.
Happy hunting.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
