The Case or Dresser would be least expensive to purchase, but as Wayne said there is an abundance of aftermarket parts available for the Cat's, so that being said that would put thier parts cheaper than the rest.

Over the years I've worked on just about all the different brands of equipment at least once. My recomendation, from the standpoint of a mechanic, would always be to go with an older CAT, at least in the dozer department. They're not always cheap to buy or to work on, but in the end you get what you pay for. From a maintenance standpoint they're simple to work on, but reliable enough to not require alot of work other than the routine stuff. Also, with a CAT, just about any part you should need will either be in stock at the local dealer, or be available overnight from the nearest depot. My experience with most other makes is if the part isn't there, it may often take several days. Also the amount of quality aftermarket parts available for CAT equipment, from the undercarriage, to cutting edges, to engine parts, etc, etc is much larger than for any other brand I know. And because the older CAT dozers will last for a lifetime if you give them a little TLC and plenty of grease and oil, in the end this can result in a significant cost savings over the life of the machine.
But everyone has their own favorite brands and there are pros and cons to them all, so this is just one mans opinion.

Hi, Jack. I think you answered your own question in your opening statement - even before you had asked it. Cat D6, C or D or even an old B which was discontinued and then re-instated as the D5.
The only other make I'd give any serious consideration would be Komatsu. Just choose whatever you buy very carefully. Not all vendors are totally honest and/or trustworthy.
If it is a dealer, ask the locals around where the dealer trades about their reputation as well as checking the machine over fully.
If it is a private sale, ask some of the locals about the history of the machine. Happy hunting. You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas.

An old D6C or D are reliable machines, fix them right and they stay fixed.
