Loader owner- I

Well, O.K. fellas, Ive read a number of posts from you guys looking for a dozer to push up trees and grade ditchbanks, etc. Nobody ever seems to bring up crawler/loaders. Why is that? I've had a Cat D7
cable lift that I could do nearly any grading work I wanted. I now own a Case 450 loader. Granted, the loader is a lightweight compared to that old D7... BUT ever try to lift anything with that dozer blade? Or, ever try to guide a tree that you've dug out of the ground to fall in the direction you need it to? Our 450 Case is cheaper to operate, repair, and move than our old D7 ever was. As far as grubbing out land, or clearing fence lines I'd have to say the loader with a GP bucket and good cutting teeth will get the job done well enough to please any folks I know. Maybe not as fast as a big dozer, but it will get the stumps out with the major roots, load the cut stump up in a dumptruck, or dig a stump pit to bury it. That dozer will beat a loader for time needed to grade, but the loader can grade well enough for any farm. My experience is that the dozer is a fine tool to ease out the grade to near perfection, but the loader is a far more versatile machine for the small farmer. I owned the D7 for 4 years. The Case has been on our farm for 7 years now. I'll be interested in your experiences- Mike D.

The track loader is the second best machine at everything. Every other machine is better at a particular job, but no machine will do everything like a trackloader. I farm and do grading work on the side. I have a 953B, D4D, D7G and a 225 trackhoe. For the average joe who wants a driveway built and a basement dug the only machine used on the job is the 953 loader. D7 is used for heavy dozing and ripping. The 225 is used for laying pipe or digging out shot rock. We'll put 3 times the hours on the 953 in a year than we'll put on the other machines combined.

I have a small JD crawler loader and I love it. I have a blade attachment for the front so I have the best of both worlds. Prior to my crawler/loader I had a Bobcat. I always heard that the Bobcat was the best all around machine. That is not true in any way. My crawler loader can lift more, is more stable while lifting, and can push ten times the dirt that Bobcat would. The best investment I made was purchasing the crawler/loader and I would recommend them to anyone using them around the farm.

I agree. I have a jd 450c crawler loader. It can push 7 or 8 times the dirt (even with a bobcat in the pile) than any bobcat I have used (753 etc). It can pack more dirt than any also(especially when it is heavy) than a bobcat. But most importantly if you ever tried scrapping down (plowing) hard pan you will sure see the difference between nite and day. The crawler will plow piles of the hard pan that the bobcat will not touch. The crawl;er loader is a much better machine for moving earth. ANd you would think the bobcat would be much faster well it is not. Just because you are bouncing all around (can not go full speed in rough terrain)killing your kidneys you seem to be going fast. When actually the top speed for both machines is about the same 4.5 mph. The bobcat is a far superior machine when it comes to tight turning and small landscaping jobs -then there is no better. But if you are not leveling out the front yard and carrying top soil or drain rock all the time then the best bet is for the crawler loader. It is much better for land clrearing and can still do the landscaping. I can quite easiley put my bucket on a 12 inch tree and push it over--if there is a bigger one I just put the teeth of the bucket under the roots and rip. I love my crawler--I love bobcats too--but they do not cut it at all (even with running the snot out of them) when it comes to land clearing or pushing hardpan.

Not trying to start a war here, but a good 863 bobcat with a good operator will suprize you they are very fast getting around, very versatile, very stable, easy to move with a 3/4 ton pickup, I load 3000 lb pallets on trailer, can dig basements, can get in the basement to spread gravel, can load logs on trugk, and can skid the logs out. I'm not knocking a dozer, cause for what they are made for they are great, but a small dozer, say a 420c JD a 310/320/350 case, a 350 JD, a good 6,000/7,000 skid steer will show it something, IMHO Nat

I had an 825 Bobcat with two buckets and a dozer blade. I even had the trax for the machine. The Bobcat had alot more power more HP. The load capacity was just not as good as the loader crawler. I had a hard time removing stumps. The Bobcat would not push much dirt all the weight is in the back of the machine and the front tires just come off the ground. The crawler I have even though it has much less HP could pull that Bobcat all over the yard.

Jeff, I didn't say it would show up a loader ,I said a small dozer, I had a 350 c dozer w/6way blade and my 863 would eat its lunch, only places the dozer was better was in sloppy mud or straight pull, moving dirt the bobcat sent it to school, I could get as much in the bucket as would be in front of the blade and could carry it and dump in a fraction of the time, but, grading a road and cutting ditches that 350 was the trick, you could slick up a road fine as frog hair, tried to grub some pines about 10in. thick an dozer had to dig a basement to get them out, took the bobcat and dug 1 side and set bucket about 8 ft high and pushed them over without much trouble . A couple I had to dig around, point being, both have their uses but anything with a loader can do many more things than something with a blade

well not yo make any one mad but ANY one can run a dozer and do a fair to good job but it takes a real good operator to do a good job with a loader. i have been in the dirt bizz 34 years and have never owned a dozer a crawler loader is much more versatile

third party image

Long ago i worked for places that had several diff dozers. They also had diff. sizes of wheel loaders up to a CAT 988. None of them had trak loaders. I rented a JD 1010 trak loader one time for a week, In my opinion it was a POS!!! It's the only trak loader i've ever used. I've owned a D7, D4, and we had a JD 40 crawler on the farm when i was a kid. Now i have a Case 450 crawler, and i like it better than any dozer i've owned or used. It's really handy, and has been very reliable. Maybe if i had more expierence with a trak loader i would have went that way, but i always figured a wheel loader was handier? Robert

I'll agree I find a loader a much more versatile piece than a dozer, granted a dozer cant be beat for pushing, but a loader can push, lift, dig, etc., as stated in another post a dozer is a specalized tool, if I only had one piece of equipment it would be a track loader.

I call crawler loaders the 3/4 machine...They will take on any job , but are at best 3/4 as good as a specialized unit. For example,a dozer is a pushing tool.....a trax can push well ,but not as well as a dozer.I think the best ever was the 955 K/L...lovely to operate.Just my 2 cents...

You are wright,My back-hoe with loader is the most used tractor I got. But this week I bought a dozer. If I could only have one it would be the White Oliver 550.

There is nothing better than the right machine for the job at hand. I got a john deere 790 lc and 690b track hoe, 310d backhoe, 450e and 455g angle dozers, but have 2 450c,3 455g,and a 855 crawler loaders. I started with a loader and if I could only have one machine today it would be a 455G crawler loader. everyone here has good comments, best of luck this year and GOD BLESS AMERICIA.

Had a 350c straight blade for years, bought me a John Deere 450c last year and love it, I go to it everytime I need to do work now.
