I have a chain on my D3B cat that is very worned down and might need replacing. The sprocket and idlers and pads are all in good shape. How thick is the chain suppose to be before replacing? It is already riding on the outside of the pins? A quote for a pair of new chains is in the neighborhood of $2300. Is this about right?

Campro, compare a couple of sources on the price. But what I think from the fact you had a pin break, the chains are pretty worn out. If you like I could send you a copy of the pages from the undercarrage measuring book. Then you could measure the diameter of your bottom rollers and the step from the center to the wear tread on the idlers to determine if they should be built up now or could run some more. You should also check all rollers and the idlers for shaft and bushing wear now too. You can run the sprockets untill they get sharp on the tips of the teeth.
