I would like to know if anyone can tell me how to tighten the master clutch on the main engine.AQny help in this matter would be greatly apperciated.

I am interested in D-8 caterpiller for the rebuilding efforts in rebel war turned Western African country of ivory coast This is purely on humanitarian basis. Donations for road rebuilding for ivory coast is tax deductable thru War Child suffering of my people. Thank you

I don't know how much you know about the older machines, but I have two of them. I have a 1959 D7 model 17A with a cable blade and a 56 model D4 with a hydraulic blade. The D7 has a "wet" clutch and the D4 has a dry clutch. Your machine probably has the wet clutch type. Under your breather for the diesel engine there should be a plate that lets you into that clutch compartment. You will probably have to remove some of the floor plates to get to it. Clean off all the dirt from the plate before you remove it. After the plate is removed there should be two bolts (mine has two yours may have three or four?)on opposite ends (180 degrees from each other)of the flywheel. Loosen those up about two or three complete turns, DO NOT TAKE THEM OUT. Take a peace of oak board about a 2"x2"x24" and a heavy hammer and tighten the clutch up clockwise (if you are looking at it from the transmissions point of view. The only way to turn the flywheel is to beat it around with the board between the hammer. It will probably need to move about 1/4 turn if it is really out of adjustment. You can get the service manual that tells all about this. Go to Google.com and look up "caterpillar manuals" and order the service and operators manual for your tractor.
