Detroit diesel ?s

have a couple ?s on inline 71 series detroit ?1 how do you tell high block from low block and does this apply to all inlines . ? 2 are all 71 sleaves the same or are large hand hole and small different i am working on a 3 71 for my payloader #s on motor are model 3057-c unit #3a-43785 any help would be appreaciated thanks mike

Mike, don't know much about detroits but I do know this. Assuming that your engine was originally built for that loader. There was an option plate, maybe 1 1/2" high by 12" long on the valve cover. That plate is the key to getting the right parts for your engine. If that plate is gone you would be wise to find someone who has a lot of dealer experiance and knows what you need. It's easy for you to get the wrong liner kits and if you put them in your stuck with them.

The low block Detroits used a regular head gasket like you would see in a car. The high block units used "O" rings to seal the water and oil and what were called fire rings that set down over the tops of the liners. I have only seen low block engines in marine applications. That is not to say they were never used in equipment.

There is lots of information about Detroits around in the form of old service manuals and parts books and it is very easy to get the wrong parts. Bob is correct about the tag on the valve cover but most have been long gone on old equipment.
