I have a 500 that suffered from similar problems,
things to check, if this machine has sat for awhile the clutch may be stuck, it may need adjustment(not as likely if slipping), the brake band is jamming against the drum (if the clutch housing is full of dirt or frozen stuff), the pin on the bottom of the housing may be gone or broken, (this will cause the band to rotate and bind on itself)this pin is held in by two bolts through a metal strap about 3 inches long, I found this hard to get out as it is rusty.
Are your linkages worn or out of adjustment, I found that replacing all the bushings and straightening all the shafts associated with the steering and clutch improved the performance remarkably. And make sure that everything is adjusted properly from the inside out. You can check the final drive pinion by lining up the hole in the sprocket with the cover over the pinion shaft remove the cover bolts and you can insert bolts into the extra holes for pushing the cover off, turn them down evenly and make sure you use grade 8 bolts so you don't twist them off in the holes. Take your time and have a hammer near by. I found it to be easy on one side, the other side to be a pain. Remove all parts slow and careful so not to drop anything down inside. Putting two jacks under the machine and lifting the tracks up will allow you to rotate everything and inpect the gear, Don't pull the shaft out! Email me if you need more info, when I got my machine it would barely move, I have had it apart a number of times since and have it down to a science now. It's working great!

Has anyone have the instructions for changing the steering clutch on a T500. My clutch on the left side slips and will not engage the drive on that side.

You may have a brake adjuted too tight. A lining may have come off and gotten wedged. Could even be a final drive gone bad.
