just got my manuals in...all of a sudden price JD wants for steering clutch job dont sound too bad.
any shortcuts suggested? deal on pulling tool box and hyd tank and fuel tank...is it possible to do job with them in place...i can see having side boxes off would aid in access with chain hoist to remove finals but theres gotta be another way...what about long studs and slide final out so you can sit it on a floor jack or something...about what does that casing weigh [final]...not sure if i'm reading right but does entire side frame have to be removed to get finals out? sorry to have so many questions but manual kinda surpised me. 70 350b thanx

Chuck, I did the same job last year, same machine. I made a JIG out of 1/2" bar bent int a "U" w 2 3 or 4 " legs bent at the bottoms. These will slide into the front of the final. There are 2 holes that they go into. I would recommend getting a torch w/ a rosebud tip to heat up those final bolts "they are very big and tight". They will come out easier with heat. You will need a good 3/4" drive socket set. Get some various sizes of steel plate, bars and rods. You can use these to help in knocking out the brake/ clutch arm from through the hole under the seat. Make sure you replace the Quill o ring inside the clutch housing. This is what usually leaks hydro fluid into the housing contaminating your brake band and clutch discs.

I jacked up the back end...block of wood between the drawbar and rear casting. Removed bolts from final and replaced four of them with 18" threaded rods...some grease and a cheap floor jack...and rocked them out. No problemo.

I never had to remove the tanks when doing steering clutches on a 350, just get creative with a hoist. How much does JD get now for a clutch job? May need to adjust my price.

Chuck,
Should be no reason to remove side rail. Probably do not need to remove fuel tank either, but if you are doing both sides, the fuel tank and boxes will lift off as one unit, not that many bolts, so consider time to remove boxes and tank versus smashed knuckles/hurt pride by fighting underneath them.

In that case, disregard my previous idea.
Idea #2: Lots of alchohol(the drinking kind), several friends dumb enough to fall for the old FREE BOOZE trick, and a long weekend.
