Just looked in the owner's manual for mine and it says if the filter is changed, add 5 quarts and run the engine then re-check it after the engine has been off long enough for the oil to return to the sump. Add oil to the full mark on the dipstick.

The 188 in my 450 dozer holds 7 qts with a new filter. Do not know if the same as your backhoe???

I put the 188 out of a 530 backhoe in my 450 case dozer and the oil pan's are made different accordint to dip stick it only holds 5 qts with filter and I don't think that is right.
