What kind of endeavor is rebuilding an engine on an old cable D6? Understand that it was shut down when engine began knocking. Undercarriage 50-75 % and available pretty much for the moving. What kind of expense involved for the parts for a full rebuild? Your guestimate is appreciated. Brad

I wouldnt rebuild, just buy another dozer with a working engine and bad u/c. It will be cheaper, plus you will have a bunch of other spare parts.

Hey Brad, as a heavy equipment mechanic who works on just about anything, I can tell you that an engine will run you anywhere from around $700 to $1000 per cylinder to rebuilt. This is dependant on the condition of the block and heads, ie- not being cracked , and will probably vary some from state to state also. Example, I just built a 8V-92 Detroit that was run hot and had to replace both heads and the block. Total cost to rebuilt was right at $13,000 for parts and labor, with about $4000 of that being for the block and heads alone. Hope this helps....Good luck

Don't know the series you have, but I put $11,000 in a 318 out of a D6-9U. I wouldn't recommend you spending this much on a tractor that is worth less than $3,000. I took this engine out of a 9U and it now powers my sawmill, so I could halfway justify it.
