I am replacing the engine on a 420c, and the clutch throwout spring was broken & half gone. I got a new one from J.D. but am not sure how to install it. I put one end on the bell housing cross bracket horn and route it under the U shaped bracket that is connected to the clutch pedal rod and then hook it to the throwout bearing horn. In this position the spring is pinched by the U bracket when the pedal is released. Is this normal? I have a manual on order but can't wait.

I can scan pic out of my books, and e-mail them to you, or take a pic of how mine is and send it to you, (the motor is out right now)

Isn't there 2 of those springs in there ? or am i thinking of the wrong spring, mine is a 440, but I think they are the same, you go from the eyelet on the back of the bellhousing, to the slider for the bearing, one on top, one on bottom.

Stacy - Thanks for your reply, I finally received my manual and the the foot pedal rod to the throw-out bearing has an adjustment cam that needed to be repositioned to get the U bracket off the spring. The manual does only show one spring. Thanks again.
