I have a 1986 dresser, over the past few weeks it has been lossing power. in the drive train it will not push like it used to, the line coming from the torq converter hydro pump to the filter chatters like the pump is surging. after it warms up it is not as noticable but power stays low. do i have a pump going bad?

Check the suction strainer - if there is something going wrong in the trans, convertor or rear end will find pieces there. Also check the oil level - the Dresser machines needs to be checked with engine at a idle and also check to see if oil is foamy. Remove the floor baord and check the drive shaft when first started in morning - if pump is going it will take the drive hsaft a little time to sart spinning. Would also help to know which machine you are working on.

Pump chatter usually comes from either a restriction in the suction line (filter) or the pump is sucking air somewhere on the suction side, I would change fluid and filter and inspect the suction line to be sure all hoses, fittings, or hose clamps are tight and remember air will get in where oil will not leak out.
