I have a jd 440 ic and need help. Crawler has a 5 speed trans and reverser. When I release the clutch the transmission grinds, and crawler will not move. I tried to pull it with my Super M and could not move it. Just dug holes with the tractors tires. Depressing clutch or pulling back steering clutches does not help. Really need to get it inside so I can work on it. Any suggestions?

Pull the top cover on trans and look inside. If it won't move in any gear, it may be the ring and pinion.

I've gotten a few e-mails on this, but so far ring and pinion seems most likely. Is there any way to move the machine?

Not that you are going to like. About the only way other than skidding it, is pull both of the pinion gears in the final drives. It is a pain, but can be done. Keep in mind that if you do this, nothing is hooked up anymore, and you have no brakes at all so don't let it get away.

You're right. I don't like it, but I will probably have to do that. Thanks

Ron,
You should be able to release both steering frictions/clutches and move the machine just don't pull the levers so far that you apply the brakes.

Jack it up and put a wood plank under each track and tow it with the M. Good Luck

Remove the brake adjuster covers and back the brake bands off so the won't engage, if they are adjusted like mine the brake engages very quickly.
If you back them off alot it may work, worth a try.
