max what i always do is leave seals in hyd oil overnight and agood way to loosen the retaining nut is to place the eye of the rod in the rear hitch with pin in place and awooden block under the rod and make sure to assemble packings and chevrons in the correct direction you usually find some sort of information in the parts carton all the best oscar

Its a simple lob to do as long as you have the proper tools. My tools of choice are spanner wrench to fit the gland, o-ring picks to remove orings and back-up rings, and a 1" drive pneumatic impact gun. The bolt/nut on the rod end are normally torqued to about 275 ft-lbs and are loctited in place. If you don't have the proper tools, you will be wasting a lot of time. It normally takes only 45 minutes to repack a cylinder. A word of note, if you take it in to be repaired, in my experience it was quicker to leave it on the tractor if possible, its easier to take off the gland when its mounted and you can 'flip' the rod over on the stabilizer legs to remove the rod bolt/nut. Good luck.

Thanks for the great advice ,I do have four spanner wrenches hopefully I have the size needed, and have inpact but 3/4 so I think I can manage but I have one more question when seating pistion, rod and gland back in to cylinder will I need to compress the new seals to get them back in the cylinder or is there enough tolorence to ease them back down the cylinder with out using somthing like a ring compressor. thank you again for the help.

Just loosen the cylinder tube hydraulic fitting and ease it on in, after lubing the piston up with hydraulic fluid. Be sure to loctite the rod bolt/nut when you tighten it back up and put in the lock screw into the gland so these won't back out later on in use. Also the backup ring is always on the backside or behind the oring thats on the pressure side, I always thought of it as a wimp seal in how its always behind the oring that faces all the pressure.
