I got the 420 fired up to go grub some trees out, we were on the way, putting right along then it backfired twice and quit. It was getting to be late afternoon so I didn't mess with it. Any ideas? Thanks

take drain plug out of bottom of carb and see if fuel is flowing through carb--not a couple drops at a time now. if fuel ok check spark. if no spark check fuse in dash ,switch etc to make sure power getting to coil. if ok check rest of dist. good luck

Check the 90 degree brass fitting that goes into the carb. (I think it's there, I'm remembering from 20 years back, if not, check any fitting in the line including the one into the tank.) There's a cylindrical seive brazed into the fitting. Clean it or tear it off and put a disposable filter in the line.

Mine did that, would keep running a little for a while by playing with the choke. The problem was crap in the tank plugging the hole into the sediment bowl. I fixed it right there in the woods with the 1/2x9/16s wrench I carry in my pocket and the Leatherman on my belt. It was quite a trick keeping my finger over the hole to hold back the gas in the tank while cleaning the plugged fitting, but I did it.

Yes, I put 4 gallons in it before I started it. The tank was dry, maybe I'm not getting gas to the carb. We went about 1,000 feet before it quit. It was running fine.

If your tank was dry, you might have stirred up some rust pouring gas into the tank. This usually ends up in the sediment bowl, so if you clean it out and where the gas flows on into the carb, you should be fine. Worst case scenereo is it got into the carb and you'll have to clean out all the jets.

I would pull the gas line off at the carb and see if gas comes through, its easy to do and wont take long, if it isnt that then check for spark, ,,,,,Jim
