I need to reverse the flywheel ring gear on my
1936 Model WM Allis-Chalmers crawler. Is there a
bevel on the front edge, and if so, should I just
rotate the ring 90 degrees so the chewed up part
isn't where the engine usually stops? This will
be a major project for me, and I need all the
advice I can get. Has anybody else done this
lately and can tell me about unforeseen problems
(like shaft alignment problems, etc.)? Thanks in
advance!

Rusty, we have 2 M crawlers, 1 running, and one for parts. After replacing a final drive and steering clutch, if I was going to split one to do the ring gear, I would either buy a new one (if you can get one), turn the old one over (if the teeth have the bevel on the other side), or find a good used one. Just rotating the ring gear will not solve your problem, because I'm sure the motor doesn't stop at the same place every time, and like Drott said, you might have an alignment problem, or it just wore out. I will be totally dismantleing our parts M in the next couple of months, and if you could wait, I can see what the ring gear looks like and let you know? E-mail me and let me know.

Personally, I would just get a replacement flywheel. The real question to ask first is why the starter is not retracting the starting gear properly or was it not aligned properly. It could be just bad luck that it wore out.

The turning of the ring is a major hassle. You will have to expand and contract it to get it on and off of there. Or have a press big enough to work it off. You will have to split the tractor no matter what you are going to do. Luckily AC dropped that designe in the HD5 and 9's and thereafter. Now just take out engine is easy.

I had know of where there was a machine a while back but do not know the parting status.

Go to www.ibdozing.com got a lot of AC guy there.
