i went to look at a jd 40c this winter and well it was pretty much junk. both the final drives were cracked/welded and had chunks of metal missing from them. also all 8 rollers were misssing. the thing must have sit outside for a long time because there was a crack in the bore about 1/16 wide..which causes the need for an engine. so now for the positive aspects. i have a 420 i used for parts on my 440 and have almost everything i need to fix the 40. will the engine from the 420 interchange with the 40? it looked like it would fit and the bolt pattern seemed to match up on the bellhousing, but the hydraulic pump on the 40 looked like it drove off the cam gear vs the 420 which drives off the crank. so now with all that being said what would you give for it? and how much would it cost to get an engine in decent shape?
