I have a 1953 caterpiller loader, the diesel engine runs good, however starting the pony engine to get it going is a different story.I have two questions,1.Does anyone know where I might find a new or rebuilt carberator or a rebuild kit? 2.Is it possible to convert this old crawler to a electric starter? Any information that I can get will be much appreciated.

James --

Which model do you have?

If you're in a colder climate, you may want to stay with the starting engine system. If it were mine, I'd try to fix the pony rather than go electric. Parts are challenging, but possible, and once you get a good running pony nothing beats it.

The carbs are usually Zenith and kits are still available. If you can find out what carb. shop in your area used to be the Zenith dealer they may even have new old stock -- if not I'm sure one of the ACMOC guys will be able to tell you of a source.

Hope this helps,

Pete

You may still be able to get parts from your local CAT dealer. If you post your question on the Antique Caterpillar site you'll get an answer, many knowledgable guys over there!

I've seen an electric start conversion and you can have both or either. You have to know exactly where to cut the hole for the starter. A plasma cutter is good for this job.
