When I purchased my 350 dozer, the right steering clutch would only work sometimes. I was told that the clutch was new and did not work properly from the time it was installed.

When I took it apart, I found the vertical shaft stuck in the bushings. I fixed that problem and took the clutch pack apart. The fibre and the steel disks measured as new, and I put it back together leaving out the extra steel disk that was in the pack. I did not check or ajust the pressure plate, figuring that the last guy did that, and that it was not releasing due to the stuck shaft and the extra steel disk.

Its back together now, after replacing a few rollers and every bolt holding the front support and track frames to the tractor (most were broken or missing). Now the right clutch slips. The ajustment is correct, with the release bearing away from the clutch fingers.

Is it possible that the clutch is slipping because the pressure plate is out of ajustment? I remember noting that the ajustment bolts were run tight to the plate and the fingers seamed a bit high. I now have a new JD-7 Gauge and am ready to take it back apart. What else should I be looking for?

Thank you for any advise you can provide.

Sounds like you fixed your problem when you got the shaft working (I'm assuming this is the shaft that moves the throwout bearing) dont know what to tell you on the stack height if it measured to new specs. it should work, but someone put the extra steel in for a reason and usually that reason is to compensate for wear, the finger height of the pressure plate makes no difference on the pulling power of the pack.

Glenn,Sounds like you are going in the right direction. They probuly had extra steel disc in to make up for wear. When you check with gauge you will find that out.I'm not sure, but if your machine has a steel bushing in the frame inside were shaft comes from final,Check to make sure it didn't get damaged when it went together.
