I just purchased a D4 track loader and I haven't own heavy equipment before. I am looking to identify a date of manufacturing for this machine so I can buy some parts if they are available. The serial number on the frame is 35C3123 and on the motor is 7U23963 SP. If anybody has a picture of what the air box and gas tank for the pony motor looks like mounted would be apprieciated.

Skip,

In answer to your question, you are looking at the tractors hour meter, sometimes the number on the right side is hard to see….it’s, sometimes past the edge of the glass cover. They can be taking out, cleaned and or a new one installed if need be.

The other question you are asking I believe is the bleeder value on top of the fuel filter housing…it’s on the right side near the top. There should also be a black knob on a short handy on the side of the governor, it’s the governor control….Cat added that so you would not have to get back up on the tractor to open the throttle when starting the diesel engine, they called it a “step saver” it was a no “lost motion” in starting the diesel… an increase in over-all efficiency was gained even though the end result is somewhat small. Hope this helps.

The HT4 was introduced in 1950 and was a new design from the old cable elevated type bucket loaders, which were the T2 for the D2, T4 for the D4, T6 for the D6 and the largest was the T7 for the D7, all of which were built by the Trackson Company of Milwaukee, Wis., there were a accessory option. The HT4 was the first hydraulic loader designed for the D4, Caterpillar liked the new design so much, they bought the company in 1951 and made it a subsidiary.

The D4 S/N 7U23963SP would be a 1953 tractor.

Here is what was said about the letters “SP” at the end of the serial number.

Caterpillar Service Reporter. (1956)
Transmission group number plates are now attached to the rear of the steering clutch case and to the transmission housing of all Caterpillar track-type Tractors, Traxcavators and Pipelayers . This plate has a number stamped on it which designates the transmission group used in that machine. If a different transmission group is purchased, the new group will include an new plate to replace the original plate. The group number as well as the machine serial number should always be referred to when ordering transmission parts.

Earlier models equipped with special transmission groups were designated by the use of the Letters “SP” on the tractor serial number plates. Such a marking on current models indicates special final drive gear ratios.

Some of the HT4 loaders had a High and Low reverse.

Thanks Kelly for all the info. I have a couple more questions, there is some kind of meter under a cap down by the injector pump do you know what it is? Also there is a knob on the top of the injector pump is that a bleeder of some kind? If so how does it work? The person I bought this from started it and I used it at his place. He had a hard time starting it because the pony motor did not run well and that was caused by a stuck open float and clogged jets.
When I picked it up he loaded it on the trailer and said keep it running so I did and when it got to my place i drove it around back played for a minute and shut it off. Latter I tried to re-start it and couldn't keep the pony running. After fixing and cleaning the carb the pony runs well but now I can't start the diesel. I did have to put water in the radiator and he had removed the thermostat. It may have a cooling problem to deal with when I get it going.

Skip, refer to that loader as an HT4. That's what they where called when the D4's where built with a Trackson Loader on them.
