Dozer stalling

I have just bought a 1987 D3B machine and started using it to clean out a pond. After about four hours using, the machine started stalling going up out of the pond. When I got to the top, she level off and ran fine. I check the tank and it was about 30%. I drained the water out the bottom of the tank and put about 3 gal diesel back in. Now, she does it every time I go back in the pond and levels out when I get back out. Any ideas?

Campro, change the fuel filter. I think you are starving for fuel when under the heaviest load. You will need to use the priming pump and bleed the filter out when you put on the new one. I think you have a fuel return line on your system. If you want to be sure it's blead, take the small line off the injector pump and pump with the priming pump untill all the air comes out and fuel starts flowing from the fitting on the fuel injection pump. If you have changed this filter before you will know when it's right from the pressure it takes on the priming pump. Do not fill the filter with fuel before installing it, you can get dirt across the filter that way.

Bob, I change the fuel filter when I got it, it ran 5-6 hours before trouble. I change it again last night, and it ran about 45 minutes before stalling suddenly. The fuel filter that was on the machine is different than what the book spec out. It is about 6" long and the one I put one is only about 4" long. This is a 23Y machine out of Japan and the engine is a 3204, but it look a lot different than then 3204 I have on my 1983 machine. Maybe I need the bigger filter?

Campro, this is another machine you have is it. I thought it was the one you had for a while. The fuel filters have been changed up but shouldn't cause you any trouble. First thing to do is to cut open one of the old filters and see what is in it. If it's clean then get a gauge and check the fuel pressure. If there is a plug in the top of the filter base try there, the thresd will be a straight thread with an Oring at the head of the plug. The fitting is called STOR BOSS(Straight Thread O Ring)I think it's 9/16 NF but check yours to get the right fitting. The pressure should be around 30PSI at high idle and atleast 15PSI under load. If the pressure is low then take off the fuel transfer pump and change the check valves, the rubber flaps in them deteriorate and the machine will run with 1 PSI but be low on power. If the filter has dirt in it you will have to clean out the tank. When the machine stalls, can you start it up right away or do you have to bleed the fuel system? if so the fuel return line might be plugged. The fuel return line is a constant bleed line to return any air that builds up in the injector pump to the tank. If the fuel suction line has a leak and the pump picks up any air it will bulid up in the injector pump and shut you down if the line is plugged. This is the small 1/4" line off the top of the injector pump. Take the cap off the tank and then take the line off of the pump and blow back it with an air line, listen for the air coming back to the tank. Do this test first, not sure if there is a tap on this line at the tank bottom or not, it might be closed if there is. Sorry for the long post. Email if you want.
