I've looked all over the maintenance manual for the correct procedure for changing the fan/alternator belt on my 450 dozer. It looks like you have to take the front end off the machine and take out the hydraulic pump to get the belt to the crank pully. I'd like to believe there is an easier way to put a fan belt on....

I used a crocodile belt, the type that has links that you join together, works well in oil or dust etc

I don't know if Cat is the same, but I had an old Dresser dozer that had a notched coupler from the drive shaft to the hydraulic pump. This coupler had a large spring behind it, forcing the coupler together. To change fan belts you would take a bar and pry the coupler apart. This would give you just enough room to slip the old belt out and a new one in. You might see if you have a notched coupler on your dozer.

John Deere is pretty much the same way, most of them have a lever down in there that moves the pump drive away from crank pulley so you can change belts.
