I have an HD5 that has been sitting for 5+ years and I am trying to get it back running. I had some problems with the steering clutches but I have got all of this back together only to find out that the engine is stuck. It has the Detroit Diesel 2-71. Can anyone give me any pointers on where to start? Would it be possible to pull it and get it to break loose? The engine was running real good when it was parked probabley not over 200 hours on it after it was overhauled.

Any advise will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Rick

I have had the same problem. I tried kroil oil and a pipe wrench on the drive shaft. I ended up pulling the head and oil pan. I cut a 2 x 4 and wedged (tight) it under 1 connecting rod and then drilled and tapped a steel bar and bolted it to the top of the block were the head was so the tapped hole was over the other piston Then I put a wood block on that piston and threaded a rod down on to it. I turn the threaded rod down and tapped on the wedge 2 x 4. It broke loose after a few cycles of this.

If you want to try the kroil oil remember the pistons are concave. Any kroil you put in through the injctor hole will not make contact will the cylinder walls untill you fill the concave piston. I would guess that would take 4 or 5 ozs.

good luck

Two thoughts. First, remove the air chamber access covers on the right side of the engine and using a squirt-type oiler, generously squirt Kroil or some other agressive penetrant into the cylinder sleeve air holes.
Second, remove the injectors and squirt some Kroil or other aggressive penetrant into the injector holes in the head. Wait a few days and then slowly rock the engine back and forth, using the drive shaft, between the clutch and transmission---have the clutch engaged and the tranny in neutral.
Or, if you're where you can 'nudge' the crawler with the clutch engaged and the tranny in high gear, you might work it this way.
Watch the fan blade for slight movement to start with.
