Looked at a Cat trackloader(has a bucket) but the guy says it's a D4. Serial number starts with "7U". I always thought dozers used the "D" designation and trackloaders used a number designation like 933 or 977 etc. Is he just saying D4 because it is trackloader that's comparable to a D4 or could it actually be a D4 that's been converted?

Look at a post on 4-21-03 by Skip and read the follow ups. I had simular questions and got good answers. They say that if it is a cable operated system it's a T4 and if it's a hydraulic system it's a HT4. Both are D4 with the Tractson option.

I think it is actually a T4.
It is a D4 with a Trackson loader mounted on it.
Cat eventually bought Trackson--I think in the 50's.
Trackson made track conversions for wheel tractors and then got into cable operated loader conversions.
They also made logging related equipment. One was a track system for a towable skidder (there is a name for it but I don't remember off hand what it is).
