IH 100e stops pushing

Test drove a 1977 IH 100e crawler loader that I am thinking of purchasing. The tractor runs good and u/c looks pretty good. However, when digging with it, it would just stopping pushing forward. It felt like a tractor that the clutch was slipping badly on. The tracks would not spin and the engine never really changed tune. Pick up the bucket and it would start crawling slowly forward again. While pushing hard and neither track spinning, if I pulled back on a steering lever the other track would start to spin a little. Does this sound like a converter problem? The machine is priced very reasonable at around 8k and I am afraid something may be wrong with it.
Is there a trick to running the power shift and using the decelerator? As I was getting a full bucket, I found it difficult to slow down moving forward and still pick up the bucket. Any tips on using the powershift and the decelerator?

Thanks,
John

John, from what you say I think you may be pushing hard enough to stall the convertor.I don't know how deep you where trying to dig but if you could get it to spin one track and not turn you must have been digging hard. Try it again and not dig so deep. The decellerator is to throttle down for shifting directions with out moving the throttle lever. When you load at a pile you just push into it and carve a bucket full as you lift with the hyd's Track loaders usually have a softer convertor than a dozer so more power is left for the hyd system and not used by the power train.

I understand what you are saying about stalling the converter, but my concern is that there may be something wrong with the converter or trans. I was running into a pile of dirt and had a pretty good load in the bucket, but at times it just seemed to quit pushing. Is there a way to tell if the converter and trans are not slipping? The machine has a 4/1 bucket on it. Do you think if I were to use the blade and push up against the pile, that I should be able to get the tracks to spin?
I am leaning towards not purchasing this crawler, gut feeling, but because I don't have much experience around these types of machines I just am not sure. I would hate to pass up a good deal. I may get a guy I know who has a 175 to go test it for me and see what he thinks.

Thanks for the info,
John

John, if you can use it some more where it is, push with the blade and see what it does and watch the trans temp gauge. If you have trans problems then it should over heat in an hour or so. Anouther thing would be to get a trans filter and change it. Then cut open the old filter and look for metal in it. I don't know it the torque is mounted seperate from the trans or not but if it is you could watch the drive shaft when it stops moving. If there is a shaft from the torque to the trans and the machine stops, the drive shaft should stop too or the trans is slipping.

Pull the floor plate where your feet rest and you can see the drive shaft and what it is doing. This is also the place where you will have a dipstick to check the fluid level. It may be low and this may be causing the problem. Overall the tracks should spin if you have the bucket in a dirt pile and under load and full throttle.

An $8000 bargain can turn into a nightmare if this unit is not checked out completely. Contact a mechanic at a Waukeshau Pearce/Dresser/Komatsu dealer and pay a few hundred dollars for them to check out this machine. Money well spent if you want to avoid a costly error.
