My JD310A backhoe loader has an engine oil leak. It is running down both sides of the engine at the rear of the block near the seam were it mates with the bell housing. On the right side it looks like it originates somewere behind the starter, then drips off of it. The left side looks to be somewhere in the same area. It's losing about a quart an hour. Can anybody give me an idea of what could be causing it? Rear main seal maybe? This is the first diesel I've owned or messed with. Thanks for any ideas.

I work as a service tech at a John Deere Ag dealership. I have had lots of experence with the 4 and 6 cylender engines used in older John Deere tractors and consiquently used in thier backhoes.

I am not shure wich enging your hoe has in it but my best gues is it is the 270 cu in 4 cylender enging. That engine along with its brother the 404 cu in 6 cylender engines are bad about leeking oil from the head gaskit erea.

Take a power washer or a can of break cleaner and wash the back of the engine real good where the head bolts to the block. There is an oil gally on the rh rear corner and when the head gaskit gets old oil leaks past it and gives you your leak you are discribing.

I do not think it is the rear main becaus oil does not run up hill to get ontop of the starter. My .02

Thanks guys, you have all been very helpful. I haven't found the source of the leak yet. My backhoe is parked on my property 60 miles from my home. As soon as it stops raining I'm going to try and pinpoint it.

Personally I check for the easy things first, Like maybe the copper line that goes to the oil pressure gage. I hate finding it was something so simple AFTER I have the fool thing torn apart.
Good Luck!

Could be the rubber seal for the tachometer drive. Follow the tack cable to the r rear of the block and check there.

As the other guy stated it could be the tach drive seal...or also the gasket between the flywheel housing and the block....in either case, to repair requires splitting the tractor.... just what you wanted to hear !!

I can't help with the oil leak, but on any thing we have had to split there has never been a gasket between engine block and fly wheel housing. Sounds like rear main seal if it's engine oil. Still has to be split though, It's not that tough with the right equipment.

JD uses a gasket between the engine block and a plate bolted to the back of the engine block that houses the rear seal, think this was the gasket Jonathan was referring to.
