JD 350B slow hydraulics

I have a JD 350B. Recently I have been having problems with my hydraulics being slow, and I believe loss of power. The motor does not load up when I bring any of the pistons to full extension or retraction. The filter was replaced about a month ago, and the hydraulics worked okay after the filter change. I just got this machine, so I am not sure if they worked as they should have, but they worked much better than now. I am using JD oil. At a quick idle, the hydraulics will not move the bucket (this is a loader). I need to set the throttle at about 1/2 to get an empty bucket to lift or return from the dump position. I have a backhoe as well and the piston that moves the entire boom up and down behaved the same way. Not sure about the other ones, really did not test them before taking the backhoe off. There are no external leaks that I can find. So I am thinking I have a problem with a relief valve or the pump. Any ideas on how to figure out what is actually causing my problem?

The pump does not appear to be making any strange noises and it is not getting hot. After using it for a few hours I can still touch the pump without getting burned.

Thank you for any help,

Paul

P.S. I also posted this in the tractor forum before I found this one. Any moderator feel free to detele the tractor post since it really does not belong there.

First of all, were both hydraulic filters checked? Very often the main hydraulic suction filter gets overlooked because it's not visible. When you unbolt the hydraulic-tank top cover, and remove, it has the cartridge hydraulic filter bolted to it -that's probably the one you changed. There's one more filter down under the oil in the tank. You have to stick your hand in the oil and feel around for it. There's a spring-loaded handle that you pull up on to remove the filter. It's metal and is not a throw-away item. You remove it, clean it, and put it back in. Better check that first before going on to other possibilities. If you find that it's clean, then it's time to find out if your main relief valve spring is broken. Your hydraulic system is an open center sytem, not closed center. The main system relief valve spring is in the main hydraulic control valve and is a fairly simple item. If it's broken you won't be able to make your pump labor when any cylinder comes to the end of its stoke.

I was on the John Deere parts website looking up the wire mesh filter that I think is missing. Anyway, the website says

Serial No. -184571

My serial number is 189092T. Also my Techincal Manual has a note (early units) next the the figure for the wire mesh filter. Is it safe to say that my unit was never supose to have this filter?

As alwasys, thank you for the help,

Paul

Thanks guys, I found my problem (s).

First thing I went looking for the suction filter and I did not find one. Guess I will call my dealer and order one.

Then I removed the system relief valve and I found that it had what appeared to be part of a gasket stuck in it. I cleaned it up put it back in and now the hydraulics work great. Maybe I was sloppy when I changed the cartridge filter, or maybe that peice of gasket was swimming around in the tank for years. Not sure but the problem is solved. Now I just need to get a suction filter.

Thanks again,

Paul

Does this machine have open center hydraulics? that's the case, and you've lost power in all hydraulic functions, then the problem is likely either the pump or the relief valve.

Sounds like The packing in the cylinders might be bad and leaking past. If you raise the loader up and let go of the lever does it settle back down on its own? If I can help let me know, Thanks, Ray
