You got your shuttle transmission which is has a fwd/rev manual gear selector with a hi/lo in front of the standard 4 speed transaxle. Then you have the power shuttle which has a fwd/rev clutch packs and the torque convertor in front of the standard four speed transaxle. Then you have the hydro which has a hydrostatic pump and motor that powers the standard four speed transaxle. The horsepower rating for these ranged from 43 hp on the 188 diesel with the shuttle to 54 hp on the power shuttle and hydro units. As far as the Torque convertors being bad? In my opinion it is due to the person working on them, these were rebuildable and if you had someone replacing parts needlessly, then you will have problems. These also had to have matched parts put in them and not some will-fit parts. Most problems I ever encountered with the torque convertors were due to relief valve settings, filters, transmission pumps, and output seals. Besides, with the rotors(fan blades)and turbines in the torque convertor and these are not missing a blade, what is there to go wrong with them.
