Are the D3B's good machines? A local dealer has an '87 D3B serial #28Y02005 for sale $21,000. Dealer says the u/c has only 400hrs on since rebuild. Don't know total hours of machine. Looks good in a picture but that's just a picture.

Back40;

Bought myself a D3B about a year ago. Mine is a little older (serial # 27Y....). NICE little machine. 6 way blade, LGP tracks etc. Sold to me privately, only spent $17,000. I find it easy to work on. Had to replace Left steering clutch. With a little help from a friend runs like new!!

Does it have roll over protection unit, any blow by on engine, look at all hydraulic cylinders, especially the one that tilts the blade for any leakage. Check to see how it steers, pedals should go about 4 inches and machine should steer crisply to the side you push the pedal. Make sure you have all the engine enclosures, sometimes these are missing.

$21,000 from dealer, maybe a little high. Ask $19,000 depending on what you find. Only my opinion.

Hope this helps.

I have a D3B (24Y) with dry clutches. I am having left steering problems, mostly while pushing hard. The left brake doesn't seem to hold, especially after the machine gets hot. When first started and under no load, brake seems to work fine. We attempted the CAT recommended brake adjustment but didn't help much. Could an oil seal be leaking and getting on the lining? The clutch seems to be disengaging fine. How difficult is it to replace the brake lining?

Tom,

Does your D3 have an electronic engine controller? I know that CAT engine electronics was becoming available around that timeframe but don't know if they were put on dozer engines or not. I am very leery of these since parts availability is becoming more and more of an issue with electronic components. NOt because CAT doesn't want to service these engine controls, but because CAT's suppliers cannot get parts such as computer chips.

The only electronics that D3 has is the voltage regulator.

NO! Too old, everything is mechanical. I have found, in general, no problem getting parts. Also, found this forum to be VERY VERY helpful when it comes to asking for advice.
