Help! Dozer would not crank, changed fuel filters, drained fuel tank, clean lines from tank to injector. Have lots of fuel where fuel line enters injector. Will start and run @ idol for 5 seconds then dies. Crack fuel line on injector, let fuel run and will start and run another 5 seconds then dies. Is this the injector? Help!

Thanks for all of your comments. It's the governor retainer clip inside the injector pump.

I have a 1970 450D dozer and here is what happened to mine. The fuel tank was vapor locking because it was not getting air into it. I found this out when I went to put on new water trap. When I took the old one off, the fuel just trickled out. When I loosened the cap, the fuel gushed out. I drilled a 1/32 hole in the middle of the cap and it has run fine ever since. good luck.

Last night I was able to get the dozer to run normally for any lenght of time by taking out a bolt in the side of the injector pump. It looks like a drain hole, when you take the bolt out the fuel just drips out but the dozer runs great with this bolt out, when you put it back it runs for 5 seconds then quits.

Claify some info for me, you say "injector" do you mean the injector going into the head, or are you speaking of the injector pump?

Are you sure your air system is clear and not stopped up?

when it runs, what does the exaust look like, black sooty, smoky white, normal, or clear?

What preceded this problem and reason for fuel system cleaning/change?

what about the other injectors, is there fuel at them as well? the engine will not run on just one and if you have an air pocket in the others, this can kill the engine as well.

When it dies, can you immediatly crank the engine, or is it like something holding it back?

I can help you but I need a bit more info to lead you in the right direction...D.....

The dozer had been running fine for an hour and then it quit. We changed fuel filters, bled the air, restarted and ran for 20 minutes then quit. Blew out all fuel lines (main & return). Dozer has lots of fuel at the infector pump. You can crack the main fuel line at the injector pump and it will start and run for 5 seconds with normal smoke, but will only run @ idol. The dozer turns over very well, not hard. Tonight I will check the air (which was cleaned recently) and check for fuel @ the injectors on the head.

When you check your injectors at the head, if at all possible, try to right after it quits, you should have some fuel pressure still there. If you have air, it can get trapped in the lines from the injector pump to the injector and I have never had much luck with it comming out on it's own, I have always had to bleed them out. Let us know what you find and we will get you back going again. I might not know much about a jd crawler, but I would rather work on a diesel then drive a gas. Been working on diesels since I was 5, a lot of them I can rebuild blind folded..... .D.....
