Gasoline mileage experience for a Dodge 1 ton

I'm considering purchase of a Dodge 1 Ton with automatic and a 5.9(?) L. gas V8. I know a lot of Dodges with the Cummins Diesel are used by persons on this board, but wonder if anyone has any experience with the gasoline versions. I believe the truck is a 1996. My concern is whether they are "gas hogs" or if they might get in the 15 mpg range. I'll do a lot of "highway" driving, with no trailer or load.

I purchased a brand new 2002 Dodge 1 ton cab and chassis a few months ago with the 5.9 gas, automatic and 4:10 rear end. It got 10mpg empty and was very underpowered for pulling my gooseneck and tractor. The auto was constantly shifting and the engine was screaming. This truck was exactly what I didn't need all the way around as it was to be my only vehicle. I ended up taking it back for a used Dodge 1 ton diesel, 5 speed which gets 20mpg empty and has tremendous pulling power. For comparison, I had a 5.9 gasser in a 1/2 ton Dodge and it was getting 15 mpg. Learn from my mistake, the 1 ton and 5.9 v8 are a terrible combination.

I have 90 1 ton ,360 tbi and 4 speed 4.10 rear it gets 10 mpg or less empty and lots less loaded. one time it ran three tanks out and averaged 2 mpg but that was with a 13,000# tractor on a trailer. The earlier 360's back in the 70's were alot better engines.(" Go Diesel"

I have a '91 1 ton diesel, 215,000 miles on it. It runs great. The exhaust has been "opened up" so it will breath better. I get 20mpg on the hwy, unloaded. I'd recommend the diesel.

I know a couple guys with similar trucks to that with the 5.9 engine. I'm going to say on the hiway, 12 will be average "if" you don't put your foot in it all the time and keep your speed down. My Cummins will easily get 18 or better "if" driven the same way. 15 to 17 if pushed or with a trailor. Robert

I've got 170,000 miles on my diesel and get 17mpg all day long. I replaced the trans.(automatic) at 130,000 but the Cummins has never let me down!

Friend of mine has a '97 Dodge half ton 4wd with a 360. Gets 10-11 mpg empty or loaded. Also put a new engine in it at 95'000 miles. I'm less than impressed, so is he. I'd be lo0oking at a diesel.

I think 10 on a good day. You need a diesel, if you want to get up into 15. The extra money up front for a diesel is worthwhile. You will recover it in fuel costs, if you drive a lot of miles. I like diesels so much, I have switched to a diesel car as well, 45 mpg 4door escort. -Greg

I have a 97 1500 4X4 with the 318. my advice is to get the Cummins. mileage isn't great and engine troubles seem to plaque the gassers the 318 anyway. I have changed (truck is at 157K)water pump, fuel pump, oil pump, finally at 152K the engine seized while my wife was driving it. I have heard nothing but good reviews of the Cummins engines. My neighbor is on his 3rd 318 (oil problems) and his second transmission. At first I felt my experiences were just my bad luck but as others catch up to me in mileage they seem to be having similar problems.

Ha, you both got me beat, I got an 81 chev hd 3/4 ton, 4:10 rear, 2wd, 350 with 400 hp block, 327 heads, holly 650, ex hd 4 spd transmition, will pull a d-7 with out even a wisper, but, get's 6mpg over a cliff with a tail wind! needless to say I dont drive it much, but if I want to pull something, it will either pull it or break it's self in half trying. Split the clutch plate in half once pulling 42,000# on a 43 foot dove tail goose neck, the man driving at the time forgot to down shift when making a slow turn, just stuck his foot in it....D..... ..

Its going to depend on how its specīd. 2WD or 4WD, rear axle ratio etc. I wouldnīt hold my breath trying to get 15. My 96 4wd diesel with 4.10 axle only gets 17 empty . I`d say you are going to be in the 10-12 range if its a 4wd with 4.10īs
