JD 350 reverser

The seal on the input shaft of my reverser started leaking so I pulled the engine to have a look. The seal was cut. How much play should there be on the input shaft of the reverser? I am trying to figure out if I should pull the reverser out to.

You really need to put a dial-indicator on it and measure endplay. It is difficult to determine wear, loose bearings, etc. by jiggling the shaft sideways since it will do so even when things are right. It depends on the pilot bearing in the engine flywheel for extra support. The reverser has an input shaft and an output shaft that are in line with each other. On each end, i.e. the front and rear of the reverser there is a large Timken style adustable bearing cone and race. The weak spot, however, is in the middle of the reverser where the input shaft joins the output shaft. At this junction there is a small and usually inadequate adjustable Timken style cone bearing and race. Reversers in 1010s and early 350s had a very small bearing which which is usually updated by installing a later style input shaft that accepts the larger bearing. This spot tends to fail when working the crawler very hard with the reverser in "reverse." When the reverser is in forward this center bearing is stationary. Back to checking endplay, it should be .002-.006" If you set it too tight you will burn that center bearing up pretty fast. The bearing quill on the rear of the reverser, where it joins the transmission, is where shims are added or removed for adjustment of the input/output shaft assembly. It IS possible to just remove the front cover or the reverser, remove the input shaft bearing race, and add shims to make up for play, . . . but you will probably be pissing in the wind to do so since excessive wear will probably be due to a worn center bearing.
