I have recently purchased an IH 500 C crawler and am having difficulty getting it to turn.

I believe what has happened is that the clutchs have rusted to the drum. I have torn into it and I found the clutch rods had fallen to the bottom of the housing. I cleaned them up, put them back in where they go, but can't get the lever arm to turn to enguage the clutch on either side.
I tried to take it apart but found you need both the track drive sprockets lined up with the pinion shafts, and they are not. and since I cant get it to turn, I can't seem to line them up. I then put everything back together and plugged the bottom of the housings around the clutches and filled them with WD-40 to see if I could get them to slip, but with no success as of yet.

Anyone have some suggestions?

Are you sure that your brakes are working. When you pull on the lever, it should first release the clutch by pushing on the throw out bearing and then pull the brake band to stop that side from turning. Proper adjustment is very important on all linkages.(It's not difficult) I too thought I needed clutches, but adjusting everything made mine stop and turn like new. E-mail me if you need more help.

Bryan,You might as well take both steering clutches out, take them apart, clean them up. If the clutch disc are to rusty you may have to replace them. If you need some discs I have some, Let me know if I can help, Thanks, Ray 1-330-223-1913 or email me

it moves but will not turn at all is that it? Or does it not move at all?

I just put new clutch disks in my right side of my 500C and found that it was mainly the bolts, or lack there of being my problem....

as far as aligning the shafts, I alligned the right side then blocked it, jacked up the left side and ran it until it was lined up....

Thanks for your response!
Yes it does move back and forth, just wont run one without the other.
Did you remove the pinoin shaft from the right side to keep it from turning before moving the left side?

What do you mean by the bolts or lack there of?
