I recently bought an "83" D3B. The machine works perfect up until it gets up to normal operating temps. Then the transmission stalls about 4-5 seconds before going into reverse,(forward is fine). If you shut it off for about 15 min. it works great again until it get warmed back up. The fluid level is fine and the oil looks used but not trashed. There is no bad smell either. Any help would greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Jerry, after you change the filter as Murray said, I would check the clutch pressures. Clean off the top of the trans and there is a round cover. Under the cover is the trans valve and three plugs showing. They are P1 speed clutch pressure, P2 directional clutch pressure and torque convertor inlet pressure. You need 1/8" NPT adaptors to hook up gauges to these places. P1&P2 are the ones you want at this time and use a 0 TO 600 PSI gauge on them. Check your pressures in all 3 speeds and both directions and compare readings. You should get around 350 PSI on P1 and 55 PSI less or 250 PSI on P2 at full throttle. Be carefull as you likely can't hold the tractor from moving in 1 st gear, have lots of room around you. As you go through the speeds and directions throttle down to low throttle and watch your pressure drops. Record what PSI you get in F 1,2&3 and in R1,2&3. You should see no more than a 10% pressure drop from full throttle to low throttle. You should then see where your problem is. Transmissions that work okay when cold then fade out as they reach operating temp usually indicate an oil leak some where. If you have an oil leak you will see a large pressure drop at low throttle in the leaking clutch. If you find a low clutch as I believe you will it might be a seal under the valve, take the big cover off and check the seals under the valve before pulling the trans. I left my email for you to contact me fi you like, click on my name to get it.

Jerry did you ck. the filter under the floor board? on our 79 D3 it was under the floor were your feet rest. it was on the right side near the top it was a flat cover with 3 bolts and the filter was inside. our D3 when would do this when we first started it but would work fine after that. have a friend who has a 550 JD that did exactly what you discribe and he had to rebuild his powershift it had some bad O rings inside.

Murray, if your D5 ever does that, takes a long time to warm up and shift right there is a plastic screened orifice in the valve that could get clogged. It doesn't happen often, the first ones came a part and pluged them selves but they should all be history now, the new ones can't do that.
