Just have a question as to the way to check out a blower on a detroit 2-71. We are going to look at a loader that has this engine, also if there is any other things to look for here ?

It would pay to make sure the racks on the injecters are moving freely if the machine has not run for a while. You will have to pull the rocker cover off to check this.If they are stuck in run position the moter can rev itself to pieces.Make sure the safety shutoff works on the blower intake.
Good luck.
Matt.

Hey augie, what actually are you wanting to check out on the blower. On a Detroit if the blower isn't turning the engine won't even think about running since it can't get enough air through the blower clearances to run. As with any engine see how it starts, wether it smokes when it starts, what color the smoke is, and does it go away when the engine warms up. Depending on what you see there is the best way to make a check on it. Now Detroit lists all kinds of specs for airbox pressure, exhause backpressure, etc. and with the right tools and knowledge you can check all these things, but in the end experience is the best thing to use. If your not sure about it I'd suggest trying to find someone who is familiar with the Detroits, or just heavy equipment in general, and having them go with you. Even if you had to pay a man $100 or whatever to go with you, if it kept you from spending say $10,000 on a worn out machine, then it would be money well spent. Good luck. Wayne
