I posted earlier that I just purchased this AC. Has the 2-71 seem to have plenty of power but when backing up a steep grade it runs out of power. It does not spin out. It seems that reverse is faster than 1st gear. Also even in 1st it will pull way down not even pushing anything on a very steep grade but not as bad as reverse. Some specs. on what it got. It has a 10ft by 26inch blade and 20inch tracks everything is in good shape. I would prefer a 8ft blade with power tilt. Going to build a lot of horse and 4 wheeler trails and they do not need to be 10ft wide. I live in east central Ohio are there any parts yards close to my area? Also what would be the aprox. weight of this machine with blade. Thanks Bob

Bob, try James Pharr Equipment in Shreveport La. He has gotten me everything I ever needed and new and used parts reasonably priced. Johnny

reverse was fast. It was to save time backing up. one more thing you have too much blade on that crawler. yes 8 foot is the right siz

AC deliberately made the reverse gear faster than the first gear. That has been one of the big bugaboos with IH for years they did not have a fast enought reverse. This would shorten the cycle time so that one could begin the process of pushing sooner.

One thing a lot of guys liked about the HD5 is that they had a two speed reverse transmission. This was normally in the loader but you would at times find it in crawlers as a special order

If you look at the lit for the HD9 AC on www.ibdozing.com in the resources section you will see that reverse first was faster than forward. This was because you want more power going forward since you are pushing. You are not pushing in reverse.

I would agree that a tune up on the engine per the HD 5 Service Manual or the GM 271 manual will probably help out on that engine. The larger injectors will give more power and the new inectors will burn a cleaner than what were orginal injectors from GM to AC. They were always a bit conservitive on the injectors they used. The manual details the procecure to determine if you have a bad injector. On those the tips could crack or break or get plugged with carbon. They had a special wire kit that helped to clean this out.

I think the AC manual says take the engine apart every 500 or 1000 hours to clean the air box vents ect.

You should also get the timing gauge for that motor. That will help to make sure that the timing is correct on the rack.

How much are you wetstacking on that motor. Do you have the air cleaner clean. Have you looked up into the cleaner. There is metal screen in there and over the years they will get full of leaves, grass, hay and what ever else a detroit will attempt to suck into to engine. Cleaning this out will help the engine breath better.

How do the airbox vents look into the cylinder. Are they within spec.

Also watch out for one thing. the blowers on the 2-17 are starting to get hard to find and very expensive. If in doubt, get the seals and bearing rebuilt before you lose the lobes because it will be very costly to fix. Luckily there are still a fair amount of 471 out there.

Good Luck You have a great machine.

When you get the valve cover off see if you have HV7 injectors. I just swapped mine out with N70's. Oh, what a difference.

Bob, Your crawler will weigh about 11,250 without the blade, your blade could weigh around 2000 lbs?? So your looking at around 13 to 14,000. On my machine reverse is faster than first. but I only run out of power when on a VERY steep grade, When digging I will only power out when I have too big of a bite, but on slippery ground usually spin before losing power. In other words the 2-71 makes plenty of power for the size of this crawler. Also a 10 ft. straight blade would be too much for my machine to handle. If you could rig up a 6 way 8 ft. you would have a very useable crawler. I used to get my parts out of a yard in Shreveport, La. but haven't needed anything lately so I don't know if they are still around. Johnny
