Picked up a 1010c this weekend and noticed that the previous owner had replaced the buttonhead grease fittings with a standard zerk type. Is this a good or bad idea?

Thanks for any help.....Jerri

does't matter one bit as long as you get some kind of lube inside there often

Guess I should have said that these were replaced on the bottom rollers.

There is not any thing really wrong with it as long as you remember that the rollers require 90 weight gear oil and have a gun set up for that. The down side is that the smaller fitting will wear out quicker, down there in the dirt and rocks. I would switch them back. Of course the PO may have been using grease instead of 90 wt because the seals are bad and the rollers will not hold 90 wt.

I just learned something. When did JD use 90wt. oil? And when did they use a button head style zerk to fill them with the 90 wt. oil. The ones I know about where grease, then they went to LT style, no zerk just a plug, using 30wt. series 3 oil. The roller was only half full with oil. Goes to show you're maybe never to old to learn. Just know that is what we used in our 40, 420, 430 and 440s. All had the button style zerk which was slightly smaller diameter than the 'Cat' style. We used to fill them with gun that looked like a regular lever grease gun execpt the pump piston was about 1/2" in diameter. Pump 90 wt. into them until you could feel a slight increase in pressure when the roller was full. Every so often the new guy would over do it and blow out the seal bellows and out came that roller. You could see it from across the yard; one or two pads covered with nice fresh 90 wt..

Lee, I truly believe know to much oil or grease & out goes the seals. Sometimes to good of lubing is worse than not quite enough. I wasn't around when those were built. Thanks for the lesson. HT
