My '59 T340 was converted by a previous owner with a delco-remy "Universal Generator Application Package" (I still have the instruction sheet). It looks just like the generator out of a 1960-'70's Chevy, (and other GM cars/trucks). It needs a longer bolt plus spacers to fit the engine bracket, but just has an "A" terminal (small wire) and an "F" terminal (large wire). The voltage regulator I replaced a few years ago, but it was generic too. The starter had already been altered for 12 volt. Other than lights (mine are all disconnected) there isn't any thing else to change. I don't have any problem with battery drain. Finding a generator to fit the brackets and align with the fan belt seems to be the biggest challenge, in my opinion. Mine works fine but doesn't allow much adjustment to the fan belt. Good luck, Ray

I used a delco ramey alternator off of a 1978 chevorlet but it draws juice from the battery when it is shut off,so i've been unhooking my terminal when i park it.Some auto parts stores sell a 1 wire that wont draw juice and srain the battery and an alternator rebuild shop can fix ya up too.

I solved the problem of how to disconnect the field to the alternator on my TD this way: I plumbed an oil pressure switch into the oil gallery and ran the alt. field current through it. You need the 2 terminal switch for this. As soon as you have oil pressure the charging system comes on. Fool-proof! One important thing that needs to be added when going to 12 volts is a resistor in the primary coil circuit. You would do well to get a copy of the wiring diagram for the 12 volt models but anyone who knows auto-electrics would have no trouble setting that up. Is yor serial number before 5396? After 5396 they were 12 volt. Have you tried cranking it with 12 volts? It usually works ok, just cranks faster. If you aren't comfortable with that, take your 6volt starter to a small starter-generator shop if there is one close enough and they will be able to build you a 12 volt using some key parts from your old one. This all great good fun.
