Undercarriage bolts on 955L

I have broken bolts that attach the undercarriage to the frame. There are four 3/4 inch diameter horizontal bolts on the bottom and four (I think) on top at the front that hold the track/roller frame to the machine. Three of the bottom horizontal bolts are broken off flush with the track frame, the other bottom bolt and the ones on top are loose. I found one of the horizontal bolts loose some time ago and tightened it. Any suggestions on how to remove the broken bolts and what may have caused this. What size ease-out, what type, what size hole to drill-would heating the bolts help? I haven't had much success with ease-outs in removing stubborn bolts in the past.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Peterbill

That is an age old problem with Cat track frames and there is no easy way to get the broken bolts out, best to do is take the remaining bolts out, have a look in front of the sprocket and take the two bolts out that hold the frame to the loader frame, take off any guard over the track adjuster, put the bucket on the ground and lift up the front of the tractor, high enough to clear the broken bolts, block it up securely so you can lift the bucket up and put in the safety bar,you may be able to weld on a washer to the broken bit of the bolts and then weld a nut to the washer, heat the frame around each bolt in turn and try to get them out,if not its a drilling job,get a new set of bolts and a 3/4 UNC tap, chase out all the holes, clean off all the rust and dirt of both surfaces before you bolt it to gether, there should have been shims between the frame and cross beam to give the frame correct alignment. Thanks for the info. One thing that I did not mention before is that in one of the horizontal bolt locations there is a round stud sticking out beyond the frame bracket with no head on it. It was this way when I got the machine. I don't know what this is all about. We tried to turn it with a pipe wrench and it didn't move. It possibly could have been a bolt with the head stripped off but I have never heard of that. We are going to weld a nut on the bolt/stud and see if we can remove it, otherwise we will have to try to get by with 3 bolts after we get the broken ones out. I could not see any shims there now but I did notice them in the parts manual. I haven't researched the shop manuals, but I assume that the alignment info is in there, if it isn't I will ask Bob/Ont for his charts. Thanks again,

Peterbill, you will need to email me and I will draw out what to do and scan it and email it to you. Might not be in the book. Later Bob

Start with a 1/8" drill and keep getting bigger to the size needed for your bigest ezeout. Then heat the bolts red hot with a tourch and squirt water on them to shrink them. If they are going to come out that will do it. They often break due to the loads placed on them in that location. Check the bolts at the rear under side too and make sure they are okay too. You should also do a track frame alignment when you are putting it back together. Email me and I can send you a drawing of how to do it if you are not sure how. Later Bob
